How to Change Brake Fluid?

How to Change Brake Fluid?

18 Dec 2019

One of the most important ways to keep your brake system in tip top shape is to change your brake fluid as soon as it needs it. Make a habit of going to a reputable Utah brake repair shop to check your brake fluid regularly. You can then either take it to your local Utah brake repair company or change it yourself.

The advantage of doing it yourself is that you'll save money. But if you aren't mechanically inclined, it may not be worth the hassle. You'll also need to make sure you have the correct tools on hand to complete the project, which may add to the cost of doing it yourself. Either way, it's important to learn how to at least check your brake fluid yourself.

There are three ways to check if your brake fluid needs to be replaced. The first way is to open the brake fluid reservoir and look at the color of the fluid. It should be clear or light yellow. If it's brown, then it needs to be changed.

The hydraulic braking system of most cars and motorcycles use a particular type of hydraulic fluid which is called braking fluid. This fluid is very important in the maintenance of the vehicle like protecting the braking system from getting corroded and also keeping it lubricated. Thus, this fluid itself needs a bit of maintenance in exchange of all these. Replacing this brake fluid once a year, minimum is necessary to save some of the costly expenses one might have to bear if it's not replaced on time.

It is essential to keep the manual of your car or bike handy while changing its brake fluid. Motorcycle owners have to find the valve at the brake caliper and then take it out. Now, a small tube made of plastic, or the bleeding line has to be attached to the stopper. Check whether the other end of the line is inside the bucket, so that the used braking fluid can accumulate there. Now, the fluid reservoir is to be unscrewed with the required tools. A small cup will be seen either at the front or at the rear side of the bike depending upon which brake is bleeding. No moisture is to be let in during this process. Now, seep the used oil by pressing the required brake handle into the bucket. Add more fluid to the reservoir whenever the fluid level reaches the bottom, until the whole brown colored oil has seeped out, been replaced by golden colored new oil.

The procedure for replacing car brake fluid is similar to that of motorcycles. Another person has to sit inside it and keep the brake pedal pressed while, outside, you bleed the brake fluid. Once it is made sure that all the vents are secured, the brake pedal inside can be released slowly. The fluid oil may need to be refilled if the required fluid level is not reached inside the master cylinder.
